When 2007 became 2008 it seemed as though the man wrestling fans now know as Cesaro was primed and ready to become the top guy in Ring of Honor. A number of main event performers had left the company and it was the Swiss Superman who seemed best prepared to fill the gap, and wins over Austin Aries, Bryan Danielson and Naomichi Marufuji further confirmed this.

Surprisingly the ROH World Championship eluded him however, with some pointing to a disappointing title challenge against Nigel McGuinness as the reason the door shut on Claudio. From this point on Claudio Castagnoli found himself in position to challenge many champions but much like his tag partner Chris Hero his role was to put the new king over.

Castagnoli was always credible enough to become champion at any time but ROH seemed reluctant to pull the trigger on him for whatever reason. Much like Hero he became a gatekeeper in the company, a role that he seems to be taking on in WWE as well. The Cesaro Section may be best served getting used to championship disappointment.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
