4. El Generico

When news broke that El Generico was going to be performing in WWE without his mask as Sami Zayn many fans felt that WWE were making a huge mistake. Despite the clear limitations of the gimmick Generico had become one of the most popular wrestlers in the world based on talent and perceived personality alone. These same skills surely earned him a run as ROH World Champion.

Generico never really came close to winning the big one. He had five singles matches for the title but with the exception of his final challenge against Kevin Steen the Generic Luchador was always a plucky transitional challenger that ultimately fell short. Did he deserve more? His popularity in WWE suggests he almost certainly did.

Generico came out on top in what was arguably ROH's greatest feud, but after forcing Kevin Steen out of the company (for a short while) Generico unsuccessfully challenged Roderick Strong for the title before moving back to the middle of the card. That was the role that ROH saw as right for Generico, and despite winning the ROH Television Championship and Tag Team titles the biggest prize in the company always eluded him.

Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
