6. WCW/ECW Team Up On The WWF

Undoubtedly the most famous invasion angle of all occurred in 2001. Upon purchasing the shell of WCW in March, Vince McMahon decided he wanted to run the brand as a separate entity to his own WWF.

First, McMahon wanted to give fans what they had desired for years, a genuine war between the former rivals and subsequent dream matches.

Unfortunately, the angle was terribly botched from the outset. The WCW side lacked sufficient star power, forcing the WWF to put names like Steve Austin and Kurt Angle on the opposite side to beef it up.

That didn't satisfy anyone, the storyline was diluted beyond belief before the sides waged battle in July at the appropriately-named Invasion pay-per-view.

ECW was drafted into the scenario, meaning WCW and the extreme league joined forces as The Alliance. By November's Survivor Series, the entire invasion came down to Steve Austin vs. The Rock, which wasn't what people had wanted.

Later on genuine WCW headliners like Goldberg, Hollywood Hogan, Ric Flair and Scott Steiner signed with WWE, leading fans to lament what could have been had they been around originally.
