Stalking John Cena on the June 7, 2010 episode of Monday Night Raw, the NXT rookies looked like they meant business. Entering the ring, they then dismantled Cena, WWE's top star, and set about causing havoc as the show went off the air.

It was an incredibly hot opening to a compelling story, this hungry pack of young wrestlers were determined to provoke change.

After a sensational first chapter, things began to cool. Dubbed Nexus, the collective were not booked effectively following their first few appearances. Wade Barrett was an accomplished promo man, ably backed up inside the ring by talent like Daniel Bryan and Justin Gabriel.

Due to his actions on that debut segment, Bryan was released by WWE. Management were not happy that he'd spat at Cena or choked ring announcer Justin Roberts with his tie.

Bryan was later brought back as part of 'Team WWE' at SummerSlam, the match that killed any momentum Nexus had gathered.

John Cena and Bryan rolled over the rogue squad, and they were dead in the water after that. Initially, Nexus was oozing potential. It could have been a truly enthralling story, if they had been allowed to look like more of a threat after that infamous first appearance.
