Once upon a time, ladder matches followed a pretty specific formula - two guys fought for something hanging above the ring, and when the ladder came into play, they'd hit each other with it. They'd also try and knock each other off, and sometimes even jump off of it, but the violence was typically kept to a certain level.

At No Mercy 1999, The Hardy Boyz and Edge and Christian changed the rules. The two teams had already been feuding for a while, and Terri Runnels encouraged their war by hosting the Terri Invitational Tournament - a best of five series that would see the winning tandem get $100,000 and her managerial services. Naturally, their series came down to match five, and that was a ladder match.

For the first time, a ladder match played host to multiple men, multiple ladders, and insane new spots. Ladders were used in new and brutal ways, and as a result of the extra men in the match, there were no lulls in the action. Ultimately, this was more than just an amazing ladder match - it ushered in a new level of athleticism in WWE that would become more and more important in the post-Attitude Era years.
