10 Best Wrestling Match Concepts Since 2000
10. Championship Scramble
It was a concept that debuted at Unforgiven 2008 with the WWE Championship, the World Heavyweight Championship and the ECW Championship all being defended in ‘Championship Scramble’ 5-way matches. It was a match that came about due to Vince McMahon’s wanting more themed pay per views. Vince tasked Pat Patterson, creator of the Royal Rumble, with coming up with it, wanting a new concept/match altogether.
The idea/the rules of the match being two superstars start the match and every time a wrestler scores a pin or submission they become the interim/unofficial champion. After 5 minutes of ring time a new wrestler joins the match until all 5 wrestlers were in the ring at once. And then 5 minutes after the final wrestler hits the ring is when the matched ends, with the last wrestler who scored the pin/submission being announced as the winner and official champion.
It produced a fantastic ending at Unforgiven when Chris Jericho (a last-minute replacement for CM Punk) came out on top with the World Heavyweight title and it was a fun concept that got multiple wrestlers involved in the world title picture that wouldn’t otherwise have had the opportunity.
WWE’s only had one Championship Scramble since, held the following year at The Bash where Tommy Dreamer came out on top with the ECW Championship.
