10 Best Wrestling Matches Of 2023 (So Far)
4. Kenny Omega Vs. El Hijo Del Vikingo - AEW Dynamite (March 22)
If not the very best television wrestling match of all time, Kenny Omega Vs. El Hijo Del Vikingo was almost certainly the most spectacular.
Given how far deep wrestling is into its get-your-sh*t-in era, and the unreal athletic standard, the dream match had no right to stand out - but it did, as a result of Omega's unparalleled greatness. This was structured brilliantly.
A lot of people had seen Vkingo's signature, brain-melting spots. The MP4 clips often do the rounds on Twitter. The way in which Omega threaded them together didn't just make them feel like never-before-seen feats of ingenuity and agility; every Vikingo spot felt as radical and revolutionary as something from the Tiger Mask Vs. Dynamite Kid series.
Omega was as intelligent as Vikingo was mind-blowing. As a base, Omega was unreal. At the exact same time, he got into position to take the most gnarly bumps imaginable while making it appear that he had been caught out by Vikingo's speed, agility and deception. Omega was panicked in the story of the match but composed and beyond precise in his working of it. He mirrored what it feels like to watch Vikingo's spots when taking them.
Omega performed as if utterly overwhelmed, which put over each highlight reel moment and, when selling groggily, explained the brief pauses when Vikingo set up his more convoluted spots (like that head-spinning dragonrana from the ring post to the apron). Every Holy Sh*t moment escalated and bettered the last in a match that never stopped peaking with impossible-feeling thrills.
Wrestling was exposed years before it took place, but Omega and Vikingo were able to ask the question once more: how are they doing that?!
