It took several heel turns for The Rock to really get himself over as a WWE main eventer, having drawn chants of "die Rocky, die!" during his debuting babyface run, before swinging the crowd back around while part of the Nation Of Domination.

The future legend was technically working heel, but also building a big following for his performance skills. 'The Great One' was electric. His presence and promos made it hard not to root for him, with his growing popularity leading to him going face again in the lead up to his WWE Championship promotion, and a Survivor Series 1998 showdown with the McMahon-affiliated Mankind.

The Corporate Champion was born that night. Vince called for the bell as The Rock locked his opponent in a Sharpshooter, recreating the previous year's Montreal Screwjob. Mankind was babyfaced in the process. He asked the McMahons for an explanation afterwards, but ended up eating the Rock Bottom that cemented Rocky's new alignment and alliance, though the broadcast closed with Steve Austin running the proto-Corporation off.

The Rock would turn face again before long, but the cliffhanger around which his first WWE Title was won remains a pivotal moment in his career.
