No Mercy 2008 closed with an excellent trio of matches, and the night's main event stands as the pick of the bunch. Shawn Michaels vs. Chris Jericho was a fantastic blow-off match for one of the year's best feuds, crammed with enough storytelling and psychology to make it a compelling rewatch, even in 2017.

WWE had built up the idea that while Jericho obviously wanted to win (and retain his World Heavyweight Championship), 'HBK' needed the victory. This was his last shot at glory against Jericho, and the desperation came through in his performance, with Shawn completely focused on obliterating his opponent throughout, dead set on ensuring enough damage had been done before finally going for the belt.

Michaels was able to dish out plenty of punishment, but so was his opponent, whose constant counters and devious heel tactics flipped the momentum time and time again. It all built towards a tense tug of war conclusion that had the match balanced on a razor's edge. Either man could've snatched the belt away from the other, but it was 'Y2J' who triumphed, bringing this outstanding match to a conclusion by knocking Michaels off the ladder, seizing the belt, and tumbling to the mat himself.
