Tyson Kidd had a banner year in 2014, serving as the lead villain in NXT for the majority of the summer and fall months, not to mention the top contender to Adrian Neville's NXT Championship. In the process, he denounced his wife, Natalya, and her successes in the industry. He despised the crowd's chants of "Nattie's husband" and appeared driven to prove himself every bit as worthy of the spotlight as his significant other. While he lost his first opportunity to dethrone Neville, he would do whatever necessary to remain in title contention when he and Justin Gabriel met Neville and Sami Zayn in the tag team main event of the July 10 episode of NXT. The finish saw Natalya climb onto the apron, only to get knocked off, landing with a thud on the arena floor. Zayn, being a gentleman, checked on the former Divas champion and had his chivalry "rewarded" with a schoolboy rollup from Kidd that won the heels the bout. The story development meshed with the in-ring action, never taking away from it, and the result was one of the better tag team matches of NXT's banner year.
