Shane McMahon vs. Kevin Owens was the Hell In A Cell match WWE fans didn't know they wanted.

Back in September 2017, the simmering feud was still a bit ropey when Owens demanded that SmackDown Commissioner Shane give him yet another shot at the United States Title. When McMahon refused, KO went on the warpath and insulted him, his children, then headbutted his father. The then-72 year old WWE leader took the bump like a champ.

Things were made more provocative by the arrival of a sickened Stephanie and Owens' remorseful look once he'd calmed down and realised what he'd done. The one-two punch of headbutt to the nose and Frog Splash had social media talking, which is exactly what WWE wanted. This was all designed to lead to that HIAC showdown.

KO played his part brilliantly afterwards, even hinting that he was sorry before admitting he wished he'd gone further and consigned Vince to the history books. On 12 September, as fans bubbled with suspense, the old McMahon magic was out in force.
