Pressure does strange things to people, and there are few more pressurised situations in wrestling history than the one Brock Lesnar, Bill Goldberg and Steve Austin experienced at WrestleMania XX. Madison Square Garden wanted to let the first two on that list know they weren't welcome, and they washed their hands of the match by booing everything both men did.

Austin almost cracked.

During his interview with Goldberg, Steve fessed up to almost running the ropes just so the fans would be distracted for a few seconds. He knew fine well that people wanted to see him wrestle again, and he figured messing with fan minds would take the heat off Goldberg and Lesnar for spell.

Looking back, Austin is glad he didn't start running drills. He reckons he might've made the atmosphere more toxic, but Goldberg didn't agree. Big Bill ain't too sure things could've been worse that night. The people had spoken, and they'd decided to reject both guys for fleeing WWE.
