Not often credited as a top wrestling draw, Macho Man Randy Savage toiled in the shadow of Hulk Hogan in reality and in the fiction of the WWF throughout what was a very lucrative stint with the beautiful Golden Eagle strap. But he was no supporting player; very much on the level of Hogan in terms of popularity, that Savage was entrusted with the belt on the house show loop at the original apex of the Golden Era objectively confirms that he was a true megastar.

What the reign lacked in standout singles matches, it compensated for with the greatest story WWE ever told, at which Savage was at the forefront: his slow descent into madness and paranoia was a Tolkien-esque tale throughout which Savage earned his company huge revenue and mass TV exposure on the NBC Network.

Not known for his defences, the reign is best remembered for its conclusion, at which Savage delivered the first genuine in-ring classic of a WrestleMania main event. This was incredible character work from Savage, who was so vile towards former love Miss Elizabeth throughout that even the fans who once adored him were begging for Hogan to put him in his place.
