10 Big Concerns Heading Into WWE Payback 2020
6. No WWE Championship Match
Having Payback so soon after SummerSlam is, in many ways, a double-edged sword. On one hand, it means we could see an unnecessary assortment of rematches. But when it comes to the programs that WWE isn't ready to make that happen with yet, it could mean no match altogether.
That seems to be the case with the WWE Championship. Drew McIntyre's bout against Randy Orton was one of SummerSlam's most anticipated offerings, but with the creative team not crazy about setting up a rematch so soon, they had Orton take out the 'Scottish Psychopath' on Raw and have now decided to pair 'The Viper' with Keith Lee at Payback.
We'll get to the issues of that decision in a moment, but for now, it seems that this was a deliberate move by the-powers-that-be to avoid a premature rematch (can't give Randy too many losses nor can they take the gold off Drew just yet). Unfortunately, however, it's looking like our WWE Champion won't be at Payback to compete... and that means no WWE Championship match.
