Far more than just a high-impact stunt emblematic of the wild west late-1990s reinvention of Monday Night Raw, the New Age Outlaws' assault on Cactus Jack and Chainsaw Charlie was a landmark moment for Monday Night Raw as the show within the show came to an abrupt halt at the scale of the carnage.

Akin to Michael Cole, Renee Young and Corey Graves putting on their serious voices, only believable, the company put the viciousness of the attack over huge.

It was in many ways a line the company took years to step back from, but watching it back serves as a reasoned reminder of why they remained married to the trope. The reactions of the roster, boss Vince McMahon, and fellow sh*t-stirrers D-Generation-X to the push sold the attack as a transcendent moment. Jim Ross talked about Mick Foley and Terry Funk as family men and fathers as they were scraped out of the receptacle.

Typical of Vince Russo's style, both would return 'from the hospital' at the end of the very same show, but the trivialisation of the scene rather than the scene itself has thankfully been lost the euphoria of Dogg and Gunn's brutal assault.
