When The Rock returned to WWE in February of 2011, it marked his first involvement with the company in nearly seven years. More than that, though, it set him up for a direct conflict with WWE's new top star, John Cena. In 2007, Cena had made some comments doubting The Rock's commitment to pro wrestling in an interview, and "The Most Electrifying Man in Sports Entertainment" wasn't about to let them slide. Rock was named the host for WrestleMania 27, and after weeks of trading barbs with Cena, he actually cost "Big Match John" his main event against The Miz.

The following evening on Raw, Cena wasn't in a good mood, and he didn't waste any time. For the first and only time, he used the post-WrestleMania Raw as a chance to set up the main event for the following year's Show of Shows, calling out The Rock to face him in the main event of WrestleMania 28.

The Rock accepted, and the grandest match in WrestleMania history was signed - even if fans had to wait 365 days, give or take, to see it.
