AJ Lee was in a very awkward position with WWE. She returned from "injury" at the start of March, having been off screen for three months. During this time, the WWE doctor had started proceedings to sue CM Punk for over a million dollars. This related to defamatory statements which Punk had made in his November podcast with Colt Cabana. WWE publicly supported Dr Chris Amann's case. This went as far as a feature on wwe.com which denied Punk's claims that the WWE doctor was negligent. This can't have been easy for AJ. She was working for a company that was actively supporting a lawsuit which could see her household a million dollars worse off. She was potentially having to receive treatment from a doctor at ringside who was looking to financially whack her husband. The situation wasn't a good one, so it is unsurprising that AJ has removed herself from it.
