Tomohiro Ishii has had storied bouts with men like Katsuyori Shibata and Minoru Suzuki in years past, and his match with Kenny Omega during the G1 was quickly added to that list. The two duelled in an instant classic that has already been rated five-and-a-half stars by respected writer Dave Meltzer. While the contest is yet another Kenny Omega match to break the five-star scale, it was a first for Ishii - who had previously secured three different five-star bouts.

While neither man was able to secure enough points to reach the finals, Ishii’s win over the IWGP Champion was a reminder of his sometimes overlooked dominance in the ring. But the final night of the G1 captured even further attention when the forty-two year-old veteran grabbed Kenny’s title. Omega then polled the crowd on their interest in a future championship match between the two, and the fans erupted in approval.

The bout has not yet been officially signed, though Tomohiro Ishii is likely to receive the match thanks to his non-title tournament win over the champ. Perhaps the 'Stone Pitbull' could derail plans for the future Wrestle Kingdom 13 main event by stealing the IWGP Championship away from Kenny Omega.
