It seemed like WWE couldn't let one week go past in 2019 without admitting that things were stale and needed a little freshening up. That's why, on the 6 May Raw, Vince McMahon announced 'Wild Cards' as a solution to staleness. Nobody, including the boss, had a firm grip on how it'd all work.

The amount of names who could show up on rival brands for "one night only" changed frequently, and fans cared little when wrestlers "shockingly" cross-pollinated anyway. Some workers even took the p*ss out of the idea; Kevin Owens said live on air that, "I'm here as a 'Wild Card', whatever that means anyway!".

The whole thing was another quick-fix gimmick designed to temporarily distract from the truth. WWE creative didn't have solid enough ideas to make TV interesting week-to-week, so McMahon took matters into his own hands and bluffed that pockets of wrestlers showing up elsewhere was enough to sustain fan curiosity.
