10 Changes To Fix WWE's Ratings Woes

As noted, WWE has a lot of problems right now, but luckily, they have a product that does so much right that they can learn from with NXT.

Vince McMahon has his weird way of presenting wrestling by calling it "Sports Entertainment", but the thing is, most of his audience doesn’t like it. If they did, hundreds of thousands of them wouldn’t have left over the past few years, and the remaining ones wouldn't try to hijack every live show in part due to their boredom. Just think, right now, most fans seem pleased that SmackDown is an okay show. Is that as good as we can do?

Down in NXT, Triple H is steering a much simpler ship. He presents wrestlers as the stars of the show, not William Regal, or any celebrity who decides to show up for the night. He promotes big matches weeks in advance. He doesn’t water down feuds by giving us the same matches over, and over and over again. He doesn't have the majority of the backstage segments revolve around comedy, and it works.

It’s such a simple formula, but its amazing that WWE has drifted so far away from what has worked throughout wrestling history. Modeling their main shows off of their minor leagues would go a long way into making fans once again feel passionate about the product they've become increasingly apathetic towards.

All it would take to bring some some lapsed fans back into the fold is for them to hear that “Raw is good again.” Because right now, it’s been far too long since the audience has experienced that.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
