10 Classic Wrestling Matches New Fans Need To See
4. Rob Van Dam vs. Jerry Lynn (ECW Hardcore Heaven 1999)
ECW wasn't known specifically for its technical masterpieces. In the midst of this hardcore card, RVD and Jerry Lynn expertly brought old and new school influences together. When their previous barn burner ended in a time limit draw, RVD and Lynn knew they had to bring it in the rematch.
With the ECW Television Title on the line and no time limit to contend with, these two artists were given a proper canvas with which to work. There's a sweet spot with aerial wrestling. Too little, and there's no spectacle. Too much, and it all blends into an acrobatic routine. RVD and Lynn seamlessly blended chain wrestling, high spots and, of course, some blood for the rabid ECW crowd.
While both men were capable of a high output match, the tense gaps in action provided high tension between melees. After Van Dam hit his second frog splash and secured the win, the fans were all on their feet with the roar of "ECW! ECW!" filling the air.
After the match, RVD, Lynn and referee Bill Alfonso reported high fived backstage after the match. They knew they just put on the match of their careers and they were right.
