Wrestling and horror movies are both enduring cult media. In some ways they are not too dissimilar. Both fans revel in glimpses of blood, follow outlandish character’s seeking revenge in the strangest of actions, and we call it unbelievable but watch it until the closing credits.

The Undertaker’s retirement encouraged fans to reflect on the storied career of ‘The Deadman’. Though ‘Taker evolved from the undead mortician character of his debut, many of his most iconic moments are motivated by the supernatural side.

In such a successful career, many future stars may look to wrestling’s bizarre, supernatural, and creepy depths for inspiration. However, this would be to overlook a key fact. The Undertaker worked because of the talent, commitment, and business acumen of Mark Calaway.

As the late ‘90s Ministry of Darkness storyline proved, slapping on a supernatural gimmick isn’t a guarantee to success. Thankfully, there are numerous wrestlers keeping the creepy and macabre side of wrestling relevant, through their innovative creativity both in and out of the ring.

Get ready to meet your new nightmare … In … Night of the Elite Dead, Impact’s Alive, I Know What You Did Last SummerSlam, or even a heavily misinterpreted remake of The Ring.

10. Alexa Bliss (WWE Raw)

Alexa Bliss is at a tentative position on this list as her character is relatively new. However, it has plenty of unexplored potential. There is significant fan discussion and hype around whether Bliss’ children’s TV presenter persona has its own Fiend side - mask and all.

It is unnerving to see the popular Bliss under the influence of Bray Wyatt’s control, a relationship often compared to The Joker and Harley Quinn (who Bliss used as the basis for her former look).

Much of her creepiness derives from the ability to snap between sweetness and light and slaughter and laughter. Her high-pitched giggles send chills through the spine. Alexa is yet to fully show the pain part of her character in the ring, though the moment she was guided by Bray to bash Friendship Frog to death showed just what she is capable of.

Bliss’ new supernatural side combined with her well-honed heel playbook will make her a formidable force. She is currently one of the most over female wrestlers on the roster, without the need of a title feud. WWE would do well to continue adding more character led wrestlers to their women’s division.
