10 Cringeworthy Moments From WWE Greatest Royal Rumble
2. Saudi Arabia Package
During the prayer break in the stadium, the television audience was treated to a video package introduced by Byron Saxton as showcasing the welcome Saudi Arabia and its community has given to WWE since their arrival. The package itself, though, was entirely focused around selling the progressive credentials of modern Saudi Arabia and had the queasy feel of propaganda about it.
The video featured plenty of information about the cultural steps forward taken by Saudi Arabia in recent years, with women able to drive and also sit with men in cinemas showing Black Panther. No amount of shots of Saudis on skateboards, however, could distract from the fact that Saudi Arabia is still a pretty poor country to be in if you're a woman or a member of the LGBTQ community.
WWE is a company built around championing diversity, so it feels like a slap in the face for those causes to stage such a major event in a country with a lousy record on such matters. It's one thing for WWE to argue that they can be a part of change in the future, but that change is happening now in the company, so it cannot simply be tossed aside for a big bag of Saudi cash, no matter how many well-intentioned video packages they show.
