10 Depressing Wrestling Retirement Matches
3. Ric Flair Vs. Vince Russo & David Flair, (Nitro, 12/06/00)
Oy.
At Great American Bash 2000 (which we covered earlier in this list), Flair was booked into a retirement match against his son David. Since David was not a wrestler, as should have happened, Ric won.
Not good enough for Vince Russo.
On the next night's Nitro, Flair launched into a tirade against Russo for kidnapping David (don't ask, it's 2000 WCW.) This escalated into a handicap, hair vs. hair, retirement match involving both Flairs and Russo.
Over the next four minutes, David and Russo proceeded to beat the s**t out of Ric. The scene was made even more awkward because Ric's family was ringside (including a young Ashley Flair, who the world would grow to know as Charlotte,) watching this go down.
At one point, Russo secured a model of the Statue of Liberty and pummeled Ric with it until his family threw in the towel. While 'security' held off Flair's family, Russo and David shaved Ric bald as he lay unconscious. When this was done, Russo turned on David and shaved him as well.
Ric Flair's retirement matches were a constant throughout his career, but this one was deeply disturbing, ultimately meaningless, and did nothing but make the Nature Boy and his family look stupid.
