10 Desperate Booking Decisions WWE Have Made In December
4. D-Generation X Get Their Own PPV As Shawn Michaels Takes Over - DX PPV 1997
This was the first main angle to follow the 'Montreal Screwjob' as The Hart Foundation followed Bret out of the company, meaning WWE put all its firepower behind DX. After months of being a nuisance to Sargent Slaughter, Triple H was booked in a 'Boot Camp' match against his target. Why they felt the need to call it a Boot Camp match is anyone's guess. It was a plain and simple no disqualification bout. Shawn Michaels and HHH spent months 'bullying' Slaughter who got a measure of revenge by costing Helmsley in a match against Jim Neidhart. Now Neidhart was no longer in the company, Slaughter bore the brunt of DX's torment. The match was set up to help get Hunter over as an effective heel by working with a veteran like Slaughter. This failed as Sarge was the only on air authority figure at this point, Vince would become prominent during the upcoming months. The match itself lasted for a lifetime. Sarge was struggling near the end of the 20 minutes due to his age and lack of in-ring work. Chyna had her fair share of involvement as she was an integral part of Helmsley's push up the card. The match comes to an end when Slaughter seemingly has Triple H locked in the cobra clutch, only for Chyna to hit a low blow allowing Hunter to hit a pedigree on a chair for the win. The other weird match of the night saw boxer Butterbean take on Marc Mero in a 'Tough Man' match. Yes, the creative team spent weeks coming up with that title. Mero was jealous of his valet Sable's popularity and WWE brought Butterbean in to not only sort him out, but capitalise on some mainstream exposure. This was just a boxing match with four, two minute rounds. Thankfully for Mero, the match was a work and not a legitimate boxing match. Mero ended up getting frustrated after being knocked around by Butterbean and responded by hitting him with a low blow and disqualifying himself in the process. After the match, Mero hit Butterbean over the head with a stool and ran off.
