1. Continuing Over The Edge 1999 After Owen Hart Died
Owen Hart died on May 23, 1999 in Kansas City, Missouri during a live WWE broadcast of the Over The Edge pay-per-view event. It is the saddest thing to have ever happened in WWE. Thankfully his fall wasn't shown on the broadcast, but they did mention it. Jim Ross talked about it on the air while Jerry Lawler checked on Owen and then joined Jim as well. Owen was being lowered by a harness and grapple line into the ring for a match against The Godfather. WWE decided like they would do this spectacular entrance for his goofy Blue Blazer character as a joke more than anything. However, Hart unintentionally triggered an early release and the mechanism wasn't as safe as they had hoped, so he ended up falling 78 feet right onto the top rope and then he died soon after. It was announced during the broadcast that he died, but the fans in the arena had no idea. It's not like they could go online to read about it because this was 1999. The show continued on with several more matches taking place while several superstars looked visibly upset while they went out there. The decision to continue the show is one that has been criticized for the past 15 years and will continue to be debated. In WWE's eyes, they must have thought that "the show must go on" but if they stopped it would fans really be upset that it ended early? A man died. It's okay to stop things there. It must have been so uncomfortable for the wrestlers to have matches in the ring knowing their friend just died there. Let's hope that nothing ever happens again like the Owen Hart situation. It was completely unnecessary and pointless. It's still sad just thinking about how he lost his life that way.
