If Cody wants to prove that he is in tune with the current independent wrestling landscape, he needs to pay attention to AJ Gray. One of the most vocal independent wrestlers today, AJ was the spearhead behind GCW's planned For The Culture show at WrestleMania Weekend this year and is determined to use his rising platform to empower Black wrestlers on the indie scene.
On top of the immediate reaction that Gray's presence on AEW would get from fans online, Cody would be intensely benefited by working with AJ as the 25 year old former GCW champion has one of the best offences on the independent circuit. He is a freakishly strong and quick powerhouse wrestler, with brutal lariats, deafening chops, devastating powerbombs and a beautiful Brainbuster helping him stand out immediately on any show.
With smaller opponents who are good at selling, AJ is more than capable of producing a fantastic match, and since Cody's greatest talent is convincingly taking a beating, it would be scintillating watching him bump for a future superstar in the industry. AEW still has work to do increasing diversity, and giving AJ Gray a paycheque and national exposure is a great way to improve that going forward.
