10 DUMB WWE Booking Decisions (We Didn't Want To Admit Were GENIUS!)

2. Steve Austin Joins The Alliance

Most would agree that Steve Austin going heel in the first place by aligning with Vince McMahon at WrestleMania X-Seven was avoidable. It wasn't what the WWF's core audience wanted to see, but they ploughed ahead with it anyway. 2001 was certainly a strange year for 'Stone Cold', so here's a defence of his follow up booking.

It was a delicate subject for sure, but Austin’s post-WrestleMania behaviour was a descent into sheer madness. The once-proud renegade was slowly losing his mind and making terrible decisions weekly. Joining the WCW/ECW Alliance at Invasion was one of them on a long list, but it fit in with Steve's erratic actions from the same year.

Conveniently, it also had people choking to see “the old Stone Cold” roam free again.

Austin was self-destructive as a character throughout '01. He was slyly manipulated by those around him, including some of his old enemies, and it'd take a while before he snapped out of that phase. Stabbing the WWF in the back was something an unravelling psyche would do.
