10 Dumbest Wrestling Gimmicks Of All Time

5. The Renegade

As section 9 demonstrates, WCW were desperate to hire The Ultimate Warrior in the 1990€™s, but consistently failed to do so. This did not stop them from pretending they had, however... In one of the most flat-out ridiculous angles in wrestling history, Hulk Hogan announced that he had an €˜Ultimate Surprise€™ and teased the WCW fanbase with an image of a muscle-bound dude with long hair and tassels around his biceps. Fans were, quite appropriately, expecting to see The Ultimate Warrior appear in WCW and were, even more appropriately, somewhat surprised when €˜The Renegade€™, AKA former male stripper Rick Wilson, ran down the entrance ramp to music very similar to Warrior€™s. Still, WCW kept up the unspoken charade that The Renegade and The Ultimate Warrior were, in fact, one and the same. ...Until the REAL Warrior made a point of stating, reasonably enough, that the person aping his gimmick every week on TV was an impostor and not the actual Ultimate Warrior. ...And then I went and spoiled it all by saying something stupid like €˜infringement€™. Consequently, Renegade plummeted down the card, being buried by all and sundry before losing his final match to Wrath, one of the Mortal Kombat rip-offs mentioned in the intro...

I am a professional author and lifelong comic books/pro wrestling fan. I also work as a journalist as well as writing comic books (I also draw), screenplays, stage plays, songs and prose fiction. I don't generally read or reply to comments here on What Culture (too many trolls!), but if you follow my Twitter (@heyquicksilver), I'll talk to you all day long! If you are interested in reading more of my stuff, you can find it on http://quicksilverstories.weebly.com/ (my personal site, which has other wrestling/comics/pop culture stuff on it). I also write for FLiCK http://www.flickonline.co.uk/flicktion, which is the best place to read my fiction work. Oh yeah - I'm about to become a Dad for the first time, so if my stuff seems more sentimental than usual - blame it on that! Finally, I sincerely appreciate every single read I get. So if you're reading this, thank you, you've made me feel like Shakespeare for a day! (see what I mean?) Latcho Drom, - CQ
