Chris Benoit and Eddie Guerrero’s careers mirrored one another.

Two real-life close friends, they both arrived in WWE on the same night, and fought through similar adversity on their road to the top. Both spent several years stuck beneath the glass ceiling, but they persevered, and eventually triumphed through skill, determination, and sheer force of will.

In 2004, Benoit pulled off one of the all-time great Royal Rumble performances by winning the match after entering at number one. One month later, Eddie scored a highly emotional WWE Championship victory by upsetting Brock Lesnar at No Way Out, the impact of which was soon toppled at WrestleMania XX.

With Eddie retaining his title earlier in the evening, Benoit joined him atop the mountain, defeating Triple H and Shawn Michaels to finally become World Heavyweight Champion. Confetti poured from the rafters, tears formed in his eyes, and moments later, Benoit was joined by his friend.

Its authenticity is the reason their celebration resonated so strongly. The duo had a bond like brothers, and had spent decades working their way to the business’ highest level, only to fall down time and time again. Their joy was real, and as Benoit stood weeping beside the only person in the world who knew exactly what he was feeling, it created a raw, emotional response that can’t be faked.
