There have been some awful WWE Champions over the years, but most of these champs (Sgt. Slaughter, Bray Wyatt etc) can be justified as the company trying something fresh. There's a difference between trying something new and insulting fans by pretending a jobber is suddenly championship material.

Nobody can begrudge Jinder Mahal for getting an opportunity. He did work hard to change his body, and he did deserve to be booked as something more than enhancement talent. Nevertheless, fans watching in 2017 were horrified when the lower-card Mahal shot from outhouse to penthouse and became WWE Champion by beating Randy Orton at Backlash.

It all happened so fast. One minute, Jinder was losing to Big Cass on live events, and the next he was supposed to be SmackDown's new top heel. Taking Mahal seriously as titleholder proved difficult. Orton hadn't exactly been a red-hot champion, but at least he was a major star.

Social media blew up criticising WWE's decision.
