10 Famous Wrestling Gimmicks That Ripped Off Real People

10. Honky Tonk Man (Elvis Presley)

Straight away, this is one of the most obvious examples in wrestling history. Wayne Farris had been a stand out performer in companies such as the AWA, Stampede Wrestling and Memphis Wrestling in the early-1980's. Despite his great ability to wind up audiences, his chances of upward mobility seemed severely limited. That's when the WWF came knocking. Joining the company in 1986, Farris transformed himself into 'The Honky Tonk Man'. It didn't take much deciphering to realise exactly whom the character was influenced by. Dressed exactly like the singer, Farris lifted many other elements from Elvis Presley to create his memorable persona. The gimmick was instantly loathed, and Farris played it brilliantly. The wrestler was never one of the greatest in-ring technicians, but he did know how to work effectively as a cowardly braggart heel. Due to his ability to always escape by the skin of his teeth, Vince McMahon felt The Honky Tonk Man would be perfect for a lengthy run as WWF Intercontinental Champion. Almost everything, from the name of his finisher ('Shake, Rattle & Roll'), to his general look, was lifted from the rock n' roll stylings of Presley.
