10 Famous Wrestling Gimmicks That Ripped Off Real People

5. Rob Van Dam (Jean Claude Van Damme)

Rob Van Dam's name is even similar to the actor, Jean Claude Van Damme. That said, that's not all these men share in common. For years, RVD has favoured a martial arts style with his in-ring work, something which is obviously synonymous with Van Damme. Known for their kicks and superior flexibility, the wrestler and actor have a ton of similarities. In 1991, Van Dam was trying to make a name for himself on the independent scene. In Florida, one promoter remarked that he had a similar look to Jean Claude Van Damme. Thus, the name 'Rob Van Dam' was born. Long before this, the grappler had been training in kickboxing and karate. Van Damme starred in the 1989 movie, 'Kickboxer', adding another comparison to the list. In the early-90's, Rob Van Dam even had a mullet hair style, one which was again favoured by the actor he aped. RVD must remain one of the most uniquely influenced wrestler of all time. Van Damme's movies have always featured heavy emphasis on martial arts fight scenes, but he's not the most immediately obvious inspiration for a wrestler's core act.
