Ordinarily, it would be Gorilla Monsoon or Jim Ross that would provide play-by-play for a WWE pay-per-view, but beginning with SummerSlam 1993, Vince McMahon would call the company's next four events. Monsoon, starting with WrestleMania 9, was being phased out as lead pay-per-view voice, and Ross had been relieved of his duties in February 1994 (at least for a little while).

McMahon seemed to be a safe bet to call King of the Ring 1994 as well, but bowed out of the event due to having surgery on a herniated disc the previous Monday. McMahon, who wasn't even at the show in any capacity, was replaced by Monsoon, who called the event alongside Macho Man Randy Savage and the aforementioned Art Donovan in what would go down as one of the most unique broadcasts in recorded history.
