WWE in the Attitude Era had done a fine job of tailoring its product to attention-deficient viewers, hence the shorter matches and the sheer volume of action beats. The accelerated feel was a crucial element in WWE's winning formula of the day.

The 1999 King of the Ring demonstrates just how accelerated the overall product had become, when one counts the number of matches on the show. In total, 15 matches took place before the crowd in Greensboro, NC: one dark match (which we'll get to), four Sunday Night Heat pre-show matches, and 10 pay-per-view bouts, which included seven tournament matches.

Putting on 15 different matches in about a four-hour stretch is an idea that's quite excessive, even for the bloated standards of 1999.
