Over the years, Slaughter has done interviews where he'd note the heavy security measures he had to take as the anti-American mercenary, especially as patriotism mounted in the run-up to the Gulf War. Threats on Slaughter's life weren't out of the ordinary, it seemed. In times where kayfabe was a bit denser of a fog, less-savvy fans could view the heels as the same deplorable clods they played on TV.

After Slaughter defeated Warrior to win the WWE Championship, the crowd was understandably apoplectic. Slaughter reportedly had to remain inside the Miami Arena until 3 AM Sunday morning, out of fears that some irate fan might do something drastic. The show had been over for more than four hours, and it was some time before it was deemed safe enough for Slaughter to leave.
