Honky was another performer slated to take part in the 1991 Rumble match, and was even announced as a participant during weekend programming. By this point, Honky was part of the Superstars commentary team, and was wrestling more sparingly.

The day after Christmas 1990, Honky quit the company, though his pre-taped commentary appearances aired up until the day of the Rumble.

Honky's replacement was newcomer Brian Knobbs of The Nasty Boys. After wowing fans and critics with wild matches in WCW against The Steiner Brothers, Knobbs and partner Jerry Sags were signed away by WWE, debuting at the TV tapings in mid-December. While Knobbs took Honky's place in the Rumble (coming in third place, in a bit of a shock), Jerry Sags worked the event's dark match, defeating Sam Houston.
