The match pitting WWE World Tag Team champions Edge and Christian against The Dudley Boyz was the seventh men's Tag Team title match in Royal Rumble history. Only once before had the belts changed hands at the event - in 1995, 123 Kid and Bob Holly won a tournament final over Bam Bam Bigelow and Tatanka to claim the vacant gold.

When Edge succumbed to the 3D of Bubba Ray and D-Von, it marked the first time in 14 Royal Rumbles that defending men's Tag Team champions lost the belts at the event.

Just a note: some readers of these facts have asked in the comments why I've specifically noted "men's Tag Team belts" in related entries. The 1988 Royal Rumble featured the long-since-forgotten Women's Tag Team belts changing hands when The Jumping Bomb Angels defeated The Glamour Girls. Because of the match's existence, I have to be specific with phrasing facts related to the men's gold, as far as Royal Rumbles go. So yeah, the more you know.
