Both Ric Flair's 30 For 30 documentary, and his 2004 autobiography, detailed the life of a man whose psyche could be precariously fragile at times. By his own admission, particularly in his book, Flair noted that his confidence had eroded away in the early-nineties during his tumultuous final months in WCW, and it would have a great effect on him for years afterward.

When Flair returned to WWE in late-2001, he was 52 years old, and while still more-than-capable as a performer, he wasn't "The Nature Boy" at his peak. Flair knew it, too.

Flair recalls having the prospect of a match with Vince McMahon at the 2002 Rumble presented to him. Flair wasn't happy with his own physique, and didn't feel worthy of the match. He admits to have broken down crying in front of Vince, Stephanie, and Shane McMahon, admitting his fears and lack of self-confidence. Ultimately, the McMahons assured him that they had faith in his abilities, and he managed to push onward.
