10 Fascinating WWE SummerSlam 1990 Facts
6. WWE's First Choice To Replace Beefcake Was Davey Boy Smith
At the time of Beefcake's accident, WWE's syndicated programs had been taped through the end of July. The next set of tapings would take place in mid-July, and Mr. Perfect's new opponent would have to be established there, as those shows would air in August leading up to the pay-per-view. With most of the recognizable names tied up in other feuds, WWE looked outside of their roster of the time for Perfect's would-be conqueror.
The pick ended up being Kerry Von Erich, who debuted at the Superstars tapings in Omaha on July 16, and "The Texas Tornado" did indeed vanquish Perfect for the gold at SummerSlam. However, he was not the first choice for the spot.
That distinction goes to "The British Bulldog" Davey Boy Smith, who had left WWE in November 1988 alongside then-partner Dynamite Kid. However, Smith was unable to have his visa issues worked out in time to return to the United States (though he would find his way back to WWE late in the year). It's also been rumored that Bam Bam Bigelow was under consideration for the spot.
