"The Million Dollar Man" had played a role in every preceding SummerSlam, including main eventing the inaugural edition in 1988. Come August 1993, Dibiase was 39 years old and still a technically-sound performer with plenty to offer, but was dealing with deeper problems. After Ramon planted the long-time villain with The Razor's Edge, Dibiase left the company, having something other than wrestling on his mind.

While Dibiase did begin touring with All Japan Pro Wrestling (he and Stan Hansen actually won AJPW's Tag Team belts four days later), his motivation to leave WWE was to have more time at home, as he would have extended time off following All Japan tours.

In a shoot interview, Dibiase admitted to having mounting troubles at home that began shortly after WrestleMania 8. This led to him becoming a born-again Christian, while trying to avoid falling back into bad habits he had picked up. Working a less grueling schedule allowed him to rebuild his ailing marriage with his wife Melanie, as well as keeping himself on a more enriching path.
