Dating back to the first signs of Owen Hart's jealousy and animosity toward brother Bret at the 1993 Survivor Series, the siblings had been acrimoniously intertwined for nine months. The turn was completed at the Royal Rumble, before the two tore the house down at WrestleMania 10. Owen's King of the Ring victory set the stage for a title match at SummerSlam.

Bret claims that he and Owen were told this would be the blow-off to their long-running rivalry, which is curious when one remembers that Owen and brother-in-law Jim Neidhart assaulted Hart and his other brothers after the match. Somewhat of a pyrrhic win in that regard.

Even then, "forever" is a weak word in wrestling, especially since the two faced off on numerous house shows thereafter, as well as the premiere episode of Action Zone in the early fall. Seeing as Owen cost Bret the belt at Survivor Series on Thanksgiving Eve, it was clear WWE didn't know how to quit the Hart brothers' feud.
