Let's face it, 2003 wasn't a banner year for WWE. It's already been stated that the television shows had declined in quality, and their ratings began to go with it. Pay-per-view buyrates followed the pattern, and SummerSlam 2003 paralleled the tumble that WWE was taking.

SummerSlam 2003 did 465,000 buys, down 14 percent from the 540,000 in 2002. It was the first SummerSlam to fall below 500,000 buys since the 1997 show did a measly 235,000 buys.

While it's true that SummerSlam buys had declined every year from the record 700,000 in 1998 up to this point, later events would outclass the 2003 show. The 2005-07 editions all did more than 500,000 buys (2005's big number we'll get to), which further shows how 2003 was something of a WWE dead zone.
