WWE fans and followers were alarmed in early 2002 when it was announced that the original New World Order trio was returning to the company: Hulk Hogan, Scott Hall, and Kevin Nash. Hall was fired less than four months after his return due to substance issues, while Hogan's run was more fruitful, kicking off the need-for-nostalgia wave that is still felt today.

By the time Hogan was let go in June 2003, Nash was the last dissident standing. His World Title feud with Triple H was poorly-received, and August 2003 would mark two notable appearances before his official exit in January 2004. First, he lost his hair to Chris Jericho in a match on Raw, and the shorned Nash lasted barely two minutes in the Chamber match before being eliminated. After going out to have neck surgery, Nash would not resurface in WWE until the 2011 Royal Rumble.
