Reports surfaced in June 2004 that Matt Hardy was dealing with a possible tear of his MCL. His feud with Kane over the hand of Lita (not a Mark Henry/Mae Young type of hand, but....well, you know) extended through SummerSlam, with Kane going over Hardy in order to force a marriage with the unwillfully-impregnated Lita. You know, one of those charming storylines that would have everyone up in arms today.

Hardy would miss nearly a year of action, revealing that not only was his MCL in his left knee torn, but that the knee showed no signs of an ACL, having been shredded down to virtually nothing.

Hardy filmed a write-out angle wherein happy groom Kane slammed him into a fiery abyss eight nights later, and was off to have his surgery. During his time away, the situation with Lita would turn into something far more shocking than a lame pregnancy storyline.
