Mick Foley's 2006 heel turn demonstrated some truly inspired work from a man that had functionally retired in 2000, but still maintained his keen instincts and storytelling passion. His trampling on the blood and guts of ECW was earning him some very real heat, and he was more than holding up his ends of feuds with Terry Funk, Tommy Dreamer, and an unrelated one with Ric Flair, based on comments Flair made about Foley in his autobiography.
Plans at one time were for Foley to wrestle John Cena at SummerSlam in Boston, but those plans changed shortly after One Night Stand. McMahon didn't want Foley and Flair to blow off their issue at the secondary Vengeance event, instead wanting to stretch it out until SummerSlam, which Foley was absolutely on board with.
