The revitalized D-Generation X gave Triple H something different to do besides play a scheming heel, which he'd done for seven years previous. It also brought Michaels back to being something of a steady tag team wrestler, something he hadn't done since he was a Rocker. Michaels, at 41, still had much to offer WWE, and the brass concurred.

The weekend of SummerSlam, Michaels signed a five-year contract worth $1.5M a year downside. He wouldn't be an active wrestler for the duration of the deal, retiring months before the fourth year ended. Nonetheless, with the early success of the DX revival, and the fact that he was still Shawn Michaels between the ropes, the company wanted to make sure Michaels was apart of their future, for as long as possible.
