Umaga won the WWE Intercontinental belt for the second time on July 2, 2007, and retained over Hardy in a lively match at The Great American Bash three weeks later. By then, it was clear that the Jackass guys (read: Knoxville) had hang-ups about working SummerSlam, since early plans were for the boys to interfere at the Bash, costing Umaga the belt.

Since that didn't happen, an Umaga/Hardy rematch was in the cards for SummerSlam. However, Hardy was sent home by the company before the taping of Raw on July 30 for an unspecified violation of company policy. His suspension was only 30 days, and he won the IC belt pretty much as soon as he returned, although there were major reasons for that switch.

Instead, Umaga wrestled a rather plain triple threat match at SummerSlam with fellow heels Mr. Kennedy and Carlito for the belt. It had an exciting finishing sequence, but not much else.
