It remains one of the most groan-worthy firings in WWE history: Daniel Bryan, as a member of the one-time eight-man Nexus, was let go in June 2010 for strangling Justin Roberts with his own necktie during the Wade Barrett-led storming of the castle. The internet firestorm raged uncontrollably, as an underground hero-turned-WWE blue-chipper was done in by WWE's not-always-consistent guidelines of political correctness.

For WWE's part, they reached out to Bryan less than two months later with a plan to bring him back. Whether it was the fan backlash, or just WWE instituting a "cooling period" after Bryan's choking violation, John Laurinaitis called Bryan less than two weeks before SummerSlam with a plan to make him the seventh man, once Khali was written out.
