Across the four matches, each team had two captains, referred to as co-captains. In the opener, Ultimate Warrior and Brutus Beefcake headed a team against one led by Honky Tonk Man and Ron Bass. The 20-man tag used two steady teams, The Powers of Pain and Demolition, as the dual leaders. That was followed by Jake Roberts and Jim Duggan heading up the charge against a team captained by Andre the Giant and Dino Bravo.

Why the need for co-captains? One need only look at the main event. The heels were fronted by the Big Boss Man and Akeem, while the faces boasted Randy Savage and Hulk Hogan as the leaders.

At the time, Savage was WWE Champion, and the obvious choice to be a team captain on his own. Since Hogan as still viewed as the top star of the company, belt or not, it was decided that he couldn't be a peripheral player even one notch below his Mega Powers partner. Thus every team got "co-captains", because if only the Mega Powers team had two captains, it would demonstrate explicitly that WWE saw Savage as being inferior to Hogan.
